Mindfulness, Somatic Therapy, And Touching: An Introduction To Sensate Focus Techniques

Washington University, St Louis, Missouri

Sensate Focus is one of the foundations of sex therapy. This workshop clarifies the critical concepts and attitudes for effectively implementing Sensate Focus. We will draw comparisons between Sensate Focus concepts and techniques, and those of Mindfulness Practice and Somatic Therapy. Participants will receive updates regarding best practices, common problems that arise, and useful modifications for diverse populations. The class will consider the perspectives and considerations regarding people with sexual concerns, sexual trauma, and the varied ways individuals express sexuality. Besides case illustrations, the principles and practices of Sensate Focus are illustrated with two videos on touching techniques, positions, and frequently encountered concerns. Please note: due to the nature of this class’s subject matter, sexually explicit videos are part of the workshop curriculum. No one under the age of 18 will be admitted to the workshop.
